The Voyageur Art Club began when eight people took an art course offered by U.M.D. at the local high school. They continued to meet in each other’s homes painting, helping each other and critiquing each other’s work. One of the members had a desire to open a gallery in Two Harbors. That desire came to fruition when the group was offered a space in the Paramount Building. They opened their first display to the public on June 30, 1964, with 46 exhibitors and 200 paintings. There were more than 400 visitors on the first day! The Club spent two summers in that building, then moved into a succession of buildings in the city, cleaning most of them and working very hard to keep their artwork in a presentable atmosphere. In 1994 the Club moved into its current home in the Art Center at 516 South Avenue in Two Harbors, adjacent to the Senior Workshop and next door to the Train Depot.
Now known as the Voyageur Artists, our goal is to reach out to the Community, encouraging them to be aware of the beauty surrounding all of us. We also strive for perfection in individual chosen art form. Many of the Voyageur Artists have painted their way to prominence in our local community and beyond. To that end, we sponsor workshops by learned teachers at the Art Center which are open to both members and non-members. In addition, the Voyageur Artists award scholarships to full-time Two Harbors High School students and local college students who are pursuing degrees in the Fine Arts.
